Synopsis:
I’ve never been a stranger to the darkness. But when darkness comes knocking and looks that good, who wouldn’t invite him in?
Draven is mysterious, evasive, and hot as sin. The only thing more infuriating than how much he won’t say is how obnoxious he is every time he does open his mouth. But when a group of strangers attacks me and he fights back, causing them to vanish into a cloud of black dust, I know Draven is more than he seems.
He finally shows me there’s a veil separating the world I know from a world of demons living all around us. Turns out, good and evil are just words. Some of the demons don’t fall into either category. And I’m realizing just how easily I fit in among the ancient warlocks, the divine soldiers, and the twisted supernaturals...
There’s so much more to me. To my past. And to what I am truly capable of than I ever thought possible. So when all signs point to me having the ability to unleash Hell on earth? I’ll have to decide if I want to do the world a solid and save it, or give it one hell of a makeover.
Review:
This book was...underwhelming to say the least. I bought this book from eBay and it took me a couple days to finish it only because I had to force myself to. I bought this book thinking it was just a run-of-the-mill paranormal romance. Turns out, it is much worse than that. The world building (minimal as it was) did absolutely nothing for me. We only find out about demons like 200 pages into the book and they're not fleshed out nor are they really interesting at all but I'm going to try to list my grievances with this book in order so hold tight, something tells me this is going to be a long ride.
1) One thing this book did well was maintain the mystery of the characters. For instance, I was suspicious of a couple of the characters and I was only wrong about one of them.
2) The characters weren't flushed out at all. I don't think I can list a single character trait of literally any character besides that the main character (I can't remember her name) is self-sacrificing and stubborn (bordering on stupid).
3) The love interest, Draven, is hot and cold literally this whole book so nothing seems resolved and I got literally no joy from their relationship.
4) There was abuse in this book and I feel like the author only used it as a plot device without showing really anything deeper about the wounds it leaves or any kind of commentary on it.
5) The main character was so STUPID. I'm sorry (not really), but there is something so annoying about a dumb main character. You're telling me that your sister is literally DRAWING THE DEMON YOU ARE HUNTING AND YOU DONT THINK SHES SOMEHOW CONNECTED TO HIM??? And, on top of that, her boss is adopting her sister to get her out of their abusive household and she has the nerve to be MAD ABOUT IT??? Like I understand that you're scared of your sister being taken away from you, but you're telling me she didn't realize that this man who has been PROVIDING FOR YOU, EMPLOYING YOU AND TAKING CARE OF YOUR SISTER WHEN YOU'RE NOT THERE only has your best interest at heart. In ADDITION to that, she also didn't believe she was the key they were looking for because SHE COULDN'T POSSIBLY BE BECAUSE SHES NOT SPECIAL. This woman was living in a SEA CALLED DA NILE.
6) The only other good thing I can remember about this book is the sister that the main character is responsible for is cute. That's literally it.
So yeah, I think I got all the rage caused by my waste of money and time from this book out of my system.
